- USSR was first to send people to space but the USA sent the first man to the moon and back (1969)

- USA feared and distrusted the USSR and the spread of communism
- USSR felt threatened by the USA's nuclear weapons
- Stalin signed the Nazi-Soviet pact which made the USA feel threatened

- Truman was anti-communist which accelerated the war
- USA told the UK but not the USSR at the Potsdam Conference that they would drop atomic bombs on Japan - this angered and worried Stalin
- USSR broke their promise and set up communist governments in eastern Europe
- Churchill's Iron Curtain speech spread fear in USA about the spread of communism
- Truman Doctrine and containment policy promised to stop the spread of policy
- 1950's Red Scare
- China fell to communism so they feared others would.
