- Only occurs in solids (metals are very good)
- As a solid is heated, particles vibrate more and gain kinetic energy.
- The Kinetic Energy is passed on to adjacent particles through collisions which causes more vibrations.
- In Metals
- Metal atoms exist as positively charged metal ions in a lattice structure. They are surrounded by negatively charged electrons
- Some electrons are free and able to move within the metal. When these electrons collide with those in colder regions, they transfer kinetic energy which heats the colder regions.
