- This makes the system useful
- As it must have an output, this means it needs an input which can be processed to make the output

- A system boundary is what separates what is in a system from the rest of the world (what is not in a system)
- It can also be referred to as an interface
- A system can interact with other systems
- It can be made up of sub-systems
- Interconnections between systems is often called interfaces
