  • Collectivism
    • Humans can achieve their objectives through collective effort better than individual effort
      • Implies soc can be improved through collective endeavour
    • Endorse for two reason
      • interests of group should >>> individual
        • Collectivism encourages social unity/ responsibility
      • Utilises capabilities of the whole of society efficiently
        • Avoids wastefulness and competitive self interest in capitalism
    • Rooted in beliefs of human nature
      • Humans = social animals
      • Have the capacity for collective action to achieve their goals
        • Tied together by fraternity
    • Humans can only be defined/ understood in terms of the social group they belong to
      • Being part of a community/ society = true freedom
    • Most call for state planning to promote collectivist goals
      • Ensure that distrib of goods and services are not left to free market bodies
      • Pursuit of collectivism = increase of state involvement
    • Marxist/state socialists
      • Collective action via centralised state that organises all distribution
        • Post 1929 USSR: most industries nationalised and all agriculture collectivised
          • Complete state control of economy
          • Communist regimes in Eastern Europe pursued this after WW2
    • Moderate socialists
      • Accepted some degree of free market
        • Pursue limited version of collectivism
          • 1945-51 Lab govt: nationalised key industries but left much of econ in private hands
    • Criticisms
      • Supresses individuality + diversity
      • Leads to growth of arbitrary state power and erosion of individual freedoms
    • Less attached since 70s
      • Due to belief of dependency culture
        • Sluggish, uncompetitive economy
        • End of Cold War and collapse of USSR reinforced this
