  • Collapse of democracy 1930-33
    • Public Feeling
      • Disliked the government's association with the Treaty of Versailles - showed this by electing Hindenburg
      • Hindenburg was popular not the government. He favoured ruling by decree
      • 'Stab in the back' theory -germany could have won the war but was stabbed in the back by the November Criminals
    • Coalition Failure
      • July 1930 - elections of 1932 - 109 laws created by the chancellor - only 29 laws passed by Bruning - used presidental decree
      • Hindenburg kept changing chancellors whch made the government even more haphazard
      • Parties found it harder to work together. The SPD refused to take part in any more coalitions.
      • Hindenburg forced to rule by decree
    • Economic Problems
      • Wall Street Crash 1929 led to economic depression - Germany depended on the USA's money.
      • Government failed to agree a policy to help the economy and argued as the situation worsened.
        • Support for extremist parties rose. The most extreme parties benefited - Communists and Nazis.
      • Prices rose rapidly and unemployment. Wages fell.
