- Democratic elections, 1946. Yoshida Shigeru became Prime Minister
- ECONOMIC:
- Formation of trade unions. BUT banned in 1947 by McArthur as some became militant and threatened a general strike
- 1948, McArthur told US to: 1) stop extracting resources from Japan. 2) Promote Japanese exports. 3)Eliminate restrictions on Japanese industry
- 1950, outbreak of the Korean War: US purchased weapons for war from Japan, industry boosted from $174million to $827million from 1947 to 1950
- Reparations reduced
- US attempted to break up the 83 Zaibatsu companies to reduce monopolies
- MILITARY:
- US purged 250,000 high ranking Japanese military officials
- Americanised, over 3000 US personnel
- US placed Japan inside its Defensive Perimeter Strategy, therefore would protect against any attack from communist powers
- US gained a military base within South East Asia
- SOCIAL:
- Human and Women's rights were emphasised
- Freedom of speech, religion and marriage introduced
- Emperor Hirohito was not executed, was used instead to promote Capitalism and new American way

- Eradicated violent Japanese officials
- Americanised the army, giving Japanese protection until they could re-establish their own defensive force
