      • From 1954 Vietnam had been divided into 2 separate states: North Vietnam - Communist and South Vietnam - Non-communist
      • As part of America's policy of containment the America's helped the South Vietnamese by sending money and arms

      • American soldiers started a search and destroymissionin My Lai area
      • Ordered to destroy all houses,dwellings and livestock
        • Most had the impression that they had to "kill everyone in the village"
          • The company of young American soldierskilled 300 - 400 civilian, mostly wome, children and old  men
            • 3 weapons were only recovered as no Viet Cong were found in the village. At the time the army treated the operation as a success.
