  • Moray (1959)
    • aims
      • to investigate cherry's dichotic findings in relation to:
        • exp.1 amount of info. recognised from rejected msg
        • exp. 2 whether hearing one's name in unattended msg would cause them to pay attention to rejected msg
        • exp.3 what the effect would be to identify specific target in rejected msg (e.g. digits)
    • samples
      • all undergraduates and research workers both sexes
        • exp. 1 unknown number
        • exp.2 12 ps
        • exp.3 28 ps
    • conclusions
      • exp.3 it is difficult for neutral material to be made important enough to penetrate attention barrier
      • exp.2 subjectively, important messages such as one's own name can penetrate attention barrier so will hear instructions in affective msg
      • exp.1 a short list of simple words presented as rejected message shows no trace of being remembered
    • results
      • exp.3 numbers not important enough to break through block on rejected msg
      • exp.2  20/39 affective instructions heard by ps, 4/36 non-affective instructions heard by ps
      • exp.1 a mean av of 4.9/7 words recognised presented in shadowed msg, whereas 1.9/7 recognised in rejected msg
    • procedures
      • exp.1 short word list repeated 35 times in unattended ear while words shadowed prose msg in attended ear
        • ps asked to recall all they could from unattended msg, 30 secs later given word recognition test
      • exp .2 ps shadowed 10 passages of light fiction + told to make few mistakes, rejected msg played in other ear
        • moray wanted to find if msgs would be heard if it was affectuve so half incl. name 'x change to other ear' - msg read in steady monotone 130 words/min + responses tape recorded
      • exp.3 two groups of 14 ps shadowed 1/2 simultaneous dichotic msgs
        • digits  added towards end, positions of numbers and whether thye were relative varied, controls with no numbers inserted
          • one groups told they'd be asked about shadowed msg and one told they should remeber as many digits as possible
