- Cognitive approach
- The scientific study of internal mental processes.
- The cognitive approach argues mental processes should be studied in order to understand human behavior and the mind.
- Mental processes are 'private' and cannot be observed with the naked eye so cognitive psychologists make assumptions (inferences) of the mind based on behaviour.
- However, can be seen with brain scans
- Theoretical models: MSM is a model that explains how our memories may work.
- The computer analogy: is a term that is used when similarities are discovered between the mind and the computer and there are many similarities.
- For example a processor is compared to a brain, files can be linked to stores.
- The Schema is a name that is given to packages of information in the brain.
- Schema's are developed through experience, as a person gets older, the more detailed and sophisticated the Schema gets.
- A 'mental framework' of ideas and expectations.
