  • Coding, Capacity and Duration
    • STM
      • Coding of STM: acoustically
        • Baddeley (1966)
          • Coding of  LTM: semantically
          • Gave pps 4 lists of words to remember : semantically similar, semantically dissimilar, acoustically similar and acoustically dissimilar. Found pps did worse after immediate recall at rememberingacoustically similar words (STM), and did worse at rememberingsemantically similar words 20 mins after (LTM)
      • Capacity of STM: 5-9 items (7)
        • Jacobs (1887)
          • Gave pps list of 4 digits to remember, he then kept increasing this number until pps couldn't remember them all. Found average recall was 5-9 digits. proving STM has a capacity of 5-9 items.
        • Miller (1956)
          • Made observations that things come in 7's - days of the week, deadly sins etc.. Capacity of STM is 7 +/- 2. Chunking can improve this.
      • Duration of STM: 18-30 seconds
        • Peterson & Peterson (1959)
          • students given trigram (YNC) asked to recall these but count back in 3's to prevent rehearsal and this info moving to their LTM. Found that average duration is 18-30s
    • LTM
      • Coding of  LTM: semantically
      • Capacity of LTM: unlimited (last lifetime)
      • Duration of LTM: unlimited
        • Bahrik et al (1975)
          • Asked pps to look at photos form their highschool year book and match up names with peoples faces. Found that no matter how long after leaving school roughly 70% of pps could match up all names and faces. proving LTM has an unlimited duration.
