  • CLONING
    • cloning animals
      • Why clone animals? - desirable aspects at mass scale, animal products, stem cells for therapy. Also ethical dilemas
      • Donor egg has nucleus removed~nucleus replaced with an udder cell~cells combine and given electric shock so they divide~ embryo implanted into mother~embryo grows into a clone of the original sheep
      • this technology=useful but risky. EG: organs grown to donate to humans, could save lives but there is worry it could transfer animal disease to humans
    • Cloning plants
      • Adv:can be sure of characteristics+mass production.  Disadv:if one plant is affected, all plants are effected
      • STEPS:a plant is selected~large no of small tissue cut off~tissue grown in test tubes of dishes with growth medium~disinfectant
      • cloning plants is easier than cloning animals because they retain the ability to differentiate while animal cells loose this at a very early stage
