  • Class inequalities
    • Functionalim-concensus theory, macro, structure. organic analogy, social solidarity, socialised into a value consensus, everyone shares a collective conscience.
      • PARSONS- society needs specialist to take on specific jobs and roles to make society run smoothly. society is based on merit (meritocracy).everyon shares a collective conscience to maintain social order.
      • DAVIS AND MOORE- role allocation. most functionally important jobs in society are filled by the most talented people bringing them higher rewards (meritocratic).allocated to a role that suits they ability.
        • Evaluation- MERTON- neglect dysfunction of stratification
      • Evaluation- TUMIN- people do not all start from the same point, therefore true meritocracy is not possible. society is not harmonious, conflict between social groups (riots)
    • Marxism -conflict theory, structure, macro. people in lower classes are exploited. class divisions in society. capitalist ideology socialises people into ideological state apparatus.
      • BOWELS AND GINTIS- students experience of schooling is alienating and specifically prepares students fro their future as workers in capitalist system.
      • BRAVERMAN- deskilling of middle class workers, meaning they are becoming proletarianised as they are being seen as in the same position as working class due to their jobs being taken over by technology.
      • WESTERGAARD AND RESLER- class divide in Britain is still as strong as ever due to the way the capitalist system operates
        • Evaluation -PAKULSKI AND WATERS-  class is dead, class is not an important factor determining peoples lives
      • Evaluation - focuses too much on money shaping our lives.Marx dismisses the classes in-between using and woking class
    • Neo-Marxism- attempts to address changes in class structure, in particular the decline in manufacturing jobs and growth of serve sector.
      • GRAMSCI- ruling class maintaining power and control. ruling class spread there ideas through education, religion ad media. Hegemony-control the dominant classes have over the masses . persuades the working class that the power of ruling class is legitimate.
      • MARCUSE-media diverts the attention away from the expectation and oppression, encourages false need   and for us to buy consumer goods. Greedy, selfish, competitive.
      • SKLAIR- those in charge of TNCs have become a global ruling class as have massive amount of money and power
    • Feminism-
      • ABBOT- criticised traditional sociological ideas of class neglecting women and gender inequalities.womens experience of work is different to men. woman have lower rates of mobility because they have less chance of reaching the top jobs helps to boost mens award mobility
      • Glass ceiling- women can see the higher paid jobs through a metaphorical glass ceiling but must break through to reach them.
