          • "having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead." Colossians 2:12

    • Worship
      • Liturgical
        • A service with a set structure, including set hymns, prayers and readings
      • Non-liturgical
        • a less formal service than liturgical, but still has a basic structure
      • Informal/ charismatic
        • This is often private, or, in a group setting, without the structural rigidity of a non-liturgical, or liturgical service. From personal experience, I can attest that they are often easier to feel Gods presence and power during. They are often more popular among teens/ young adults
          • a great example of informal worship is the Soul Survivor Church in Watford and their youtube channel (that is what's linked) has some great videos from informal worship services and examples of sung worship.
            • Or their website is attached here
    • Festivals
      • Christmas
        • This celebrates the incarnation of God as Jesus, fulfilling the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament. Advent starts 4 Sundays before the 25th December, and the first Sunday in advent starts the beginning of the Christian Calendar.
        • Cards and presents are exchanged. Carols are sung, and special Church services are held, such as midnight mass
      • Easter
        • Easter is the celebration of Jesus' death on the cross and HIs subsequent resurrection three days later. It marks the death of death as well as the defeat of sin and atonement with God. The celebration of Easter takes place over a week, following Jesus' last week before His death.
        • Palm Sunday - marks Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey
          • Monday through to Wednesday - The Bible is unclear about what happened on each of these days, but they include Jesus teaching in Jerusalem and Judas agreeing to betray Jesus
            • Maundy Thursday - this is the day that the Last Supper took place on. On this day Jesus washed the disciples feet (including Judas who He knew would betray Him), Jesus predicting His death and Peter's denial. Also, this is the day that the events in the Garden of Gethsemane took place.
              • Good Friday - this is the actual day of Jesus trial, torture and crucifixion, which is odd/ interesting, though irrelevant for GCSE's to note that Jesus' exaction only took 3 hours whereas often crucifixions could last weeks. Jesus also quotes from the psalms while He is on the cross and several prophecies were fulfilled that involved Jesus, but were outside of His control
                • The Saturday was the Sabbath, so nothing happened
                  • Easter Sunday - this is the day of Jesus' resurrection. It is also when Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene and to two of His followers on the road to Emmaus. On both occasions, they do not realise it is Jesus initially
        • Celebrated with special services during the week, along with eating hot cross buns to remind of Jesus' death on the cross
    • Role of the Church
      • The role of the Church within the community is to unite the local community, provide comfort and support, give advice and create a sense of identity and belonging t the communtiy
      • Often get involved with or set up outreach programmes such as foodbanks or homeless shelters. Similairly, there are also the street pastors who aid and look after people on a night out
      • "I tell you the truth, just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did it for me." Matthew 25:40
      • "Love your neighbour as youself" Mark 12:31
      • "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." James 2:26
      • Parable of the sheep and goats  Matthew 25:31-46.
    • Growth of the Church
      • Evangalism
        • Evangalism is spreading the Good News of Jesus. It is often done through personal testimonies, spoken evangalism, or it can be done through actions, evangelism through works. BAsically, the aim is to tell people about God, and what Jesus did for us
      • Missionary work
        • Missionary work is often done abroad. It is a more organised and organised version of evangalims, which is often smaller groups. Missionary work is often a combination of teaching the Gospel as well as actions, such as helping in the community that the missionary is in
      • The Great Commision
        • "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28: 19-20
      • "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, man nor women, slave nor free, we are all one in Christ Jesus" Galatians 3:28

      • Iona
        • First Christian community in Scotland. It has a monastic history, and pilgrims go to spend time in reflection and prayer, this is often done in a pilgrimage walk around the island.
    • Prayer
      • Set prayer
        • These are prayers that are either lifted directly from the Bible, such as the Lords Prayer, or the Psalmic prayers, or are prayers that have been a part of Christian tradition for ages, such as the Creed
      • Private
        • Prayer between God and the worshipper
      • "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find" Matthew 7:7

  • For most of my quotes, I used Bible Gateway, which is an excellent website that allows for easy comparisons between different translations and shows related verses to the one that is being looked at. I have linked it on this bubble.
