        • An island off the west coast of Scotland. Supposed birthplace of Christianity in the UK.
          • People go on a 7 mile hike to the most holy places on the island.
          • They meditate, read the bible and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
      • Lourdes
        • Place is south-west France dedicated to Mary where people believe she has appeared. They claim that healing & miracles happen there.
          • People pray and bathe in the holy waters
      • Why?
        • To grow closer to God
        • To reflect on life, especially when facing a crisis or important decision

        • Christians find peace through prayer
        • A sense of connection with God in their everyday life.
    • Holy communion
      • Anglican
        • Almost the same as the Catholic
        • Some believe the bread and wine actually are Jesus' body and blood, whereas others see it symbolically
      • Catholic
        • Bread & Wine brought to the altar and the priest says the words of Jesus at the last supper
      • Non-Conformist
        • Open table - anyone can go up and take some bread and wine
        • Minister reminds the people of the last supper and Jesus's actions
      • Orthodox
        • Service on an altar behind a screen. Shows divide between heaven and earth.
        • Some bread is eaten with wine, some of it is divided for people to take home as symbol of being part of the community
    • Worship
      • Liturgical: Same pattern of prayers and responses each time. Very traditional.
      • Non-liturgical / informal: Does NOT have a set pattern.

        • Many have carol services with readings from the Bilble showing God's promise of a savior.

          • Easter Sunday - Churches are filled with flowers and special hymns are sung to celebrate

      • Why?
        • To become a member of the Church, and to have sins forgiven
      • Infant baptism
        • Priest pours water on baby, godparents promise to pray for child, candle is lit
        • Removes 'Original sin; Baby is welcomed into the church, parents thank God for their baby.
      • Believer's baptism
        • Only a symbol of forgiveness, people are old enough to make the decision themselves
        • Person promises to follow Jesus, and is totally immersed in the baptismal pool
    • Role of the church
      • Food Banks
        • Oasis Project - Helps people get jobs in a community.
        • Trussell Trust - food banks providing emergency food and help in the UK.
      • Street Pastors
        • Aim to help and care for the vulnerable
          • Working in councils, police and communities
          • Listening to people's problems & giving guidance to discourage anti-social behaviour
    • Mission & Evangelism
      • 'Therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptising them'
        • Tells Christians to know Jesus and to go and make him known to others. They have a responsibility to tell others about their faith.
      • The Church has a mission to spread the idea to non-believers, and to persuade people to accept Jesus.
      • Alpha
        • A free course designed to introduce people to Christianity.
        • Doesn't only take place in the church itself; people's homes, universities, work places and numerous other venues.
    • Persecution, Reconciliation & Poverty
      • Reconciliation
        • Christians believe we should be reconciled with God and one another.
        • Christian groups work to bring people back to gether after falling out
        • Link to Jesus' atonement
      • Persecution
        • CSW - Campaigns for religious freedom by raising awareness of persecuted Christians
        • Barnabas Fund - Sends money to projects that help Christians suffering from discrimination, oppression & persecution
          • Baber George - Muslim-turned-Christian and set up churches in Pakistan. - His home was destroyed because of this by extreme strict Muslims.
      • Poverty
        • Christian Aid - Encourage sustainable development, stop poverty & provide emergency relief to poor parts of the world.
        • Tear fund - helps people work themselves out of poverty
        • CAFOD - Helps give clean water, education, medicine. Responds in disasters.
        • 'Go, and sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven'
