  • Choosing an output device
    • Monitors and screens
      • What kind of image needs to be viewed
        • Graphics designer, web designer, or architect will need a large screen with high resolution.
        • Most office users will be working with text primarily so won't need too high resolution.
      • Where is it going to be viewed?
        • Car - e.g. satellite navigation - needs to be large enough to show clear images so the driver can easily see where they need to go.
        • Mobile - e.g. mobile phone - needs to be small enough to be comfortable to carry around, but large enough to display text and images clearly.
        • Dirty situations - e.g. factory - needs to be protected from environment. May require a stronger non-reflective screen.
      • Who is going to view the image
        • Partially sighted users may require a bigger screen than usual so that they can see more of the page at once on high-zoomed settings.
        • If the picture is going to be shown to a lot of people at once, an interactive whiteboard may be a useful output method.
      • Internet access
        • No control over who sees it, so they must consider everyone.
        • Website may look good on a large high-resolution monitor, perhaps not on a smaller screen.
      • There are very few situations where a screen of some kind isn't needed. The main issues when deciding which one to use are the size and resolution.
    • Printers
      • What is to be printed?
        • If the print output is mostly black text, then a monochrome laser printer will be most suited.
        • If colour is used frequently, either use an inkjet printer or a colour laser printer.
        • Laser printers are generally more expensive initially than inkjets, but cheaper to run.
      • How many documents?
        • High volumes are handled much more quickly by laser printers, and they also have larger paper trays so that they do not need to be filled up as often.
      • What kind of media?
        • Most printers are designed to be mostly used with A4 paper. Larger paper sizes need larger printers, which tend to be expensive.
        • Inkjet printers are generally more versatile regarding specialist media, such as high-gloss papers, textile printing transfers, metallic or plastic films, or even special sheets of cotton or silk.
      • Who is to use the printer?
        • If a printer is to be shared between multiple users, it will need to be networked.
        • Can also be connected using bluetooth or network cards.
