- 20th century-average size in 1909 was 3.5 but many families had 8 or 9. Infant mortality was 10% of babies.
- 21st century- average size family in 2006 was 1.8 children. The infant mortality is 0.4%
- Role of men
- 20th century- men were the providers for the house, they did not household chores and they were in control of the house using physical abuse against women and children
- 21st century- the men are normally the wage earner and are now more involved in household chores and help bringing the children up
- Role of women
- 20th century- looked after the family and did all household chores. If they were wealthy they employed other women to do their jobs
- 21st century- women increasingly are going to work. They now have equal rights to equal pay and maternity rights
- Marriage & divorce
- 20th century- a man and woman courted in their early teens and marry a few years later and have children. The only legal divorce basis was adultery. Divorced women had no rights to property or financial supporty
- 21st century- Couples nowadays live together without being married. Divorce is more common with one in three ending.
