  • Chemistry part 2
    • hydrocarbons are cracked passing them over a heated catalyst.
      • alkenes are produced. they have a double bond and is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
        • Useful for making other molecules, like polymers.
          • small alkene molecules join together to from polymers. This is polymerisation
            • Polymers can be used to make waterproof items. plastic bottles, ropes and casings for electrical appliances.
              • it is cheap and easy to produce
              • Plastics aren't biodegradable and this leads up to the build up of plastic waste in landfill sites.
              • Ethanol can be produced by the hydration of ethene with steam in the presence of a catalyst.
                • Ethanol can also be produced by fermentation with yeast.

    • Disadvantages of crude oil
      • causes pollution
      • increases global warming
      • oil spills damage the environment
