  • Edexcel Chemistry (Practical Assessment) CATION
    • Flame Test
      • Lithum Ion (Li+) and Strontium Ions (Sr+) - Crimsom
      • Barium Ion (Ba+2) - Apple Green
      • Calcium Ion (Ca+2) - Brick Red
      • Potassium Ions (K+) -Lilac
      • Sodium Ions (Na+) - Yellow/ Orange
      • Moisten the sample with concentrated hydrochloric acid. Pick up the paste on a wire loop and hold at the edge of a roaring Bunsen flame.
    • Magnesium Ion (Mg+2)
      • White precipitate of Magnesium Hydroxide is formed in excess sodium hydroxide (ammonia)
        • NH3(aq) + H2O (l) ===> NH4+(aq) + OH-(aq)
        • Mg+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) ==> Mg(OH)2(aq) + H2O(l)
      • Dissolve the sample in 1cm3 distilled water then add dilute aqueous ammonia (1/3 of the test tube).
    • Ammonium Ion (NH4+)
