  • Chemistry: C1 paints and pigments
    • pigment; gives paint a colour
      • colloid; ground up pigment - particles small it stays mixed in the paint
        • 'dispersed' within the liquid
      • THERMO -CHROMIC
        • pigments sensitive to temperature
          • chnage colour when hot or cold
            • useful for baby bottles ; indicate when milk is cool enough to drink
      • PHOSPHO-RESCENT
        • pigments sensitive to light
          • absorb the light during day
            • useful for fire exits sign due to the ability to 'glow in the dark'
            • re- emits when dark
      • Examples - chalk or coloured rock
    • Binding medium; makes the paint stick
      • Examples - water or methylated spirits
    • solvent; thins the paint
      • Example - oil
    • OIL
      • PIGMENT - ROCK BINDING MEDIUM- OIL SOLVENT - METH SPIRITS
        • SPIRITS EVAPOURATE SO THE PAINT DRIES
          • PAINT FORMS HARD SKIN
            • FUMES ARE HARMFUL - USE OUTSIDE
            • WATER EVAPOURATES PAINT DRIES.
              • LEAVING DROPS OF OIL AND PIGMENT - THESE THEN SPREAD AS THE WATER GOES.
    • EMULSION
      • PIGMENT- CHALK/ROCK BINDING MEDIUM- OIL SOLVENT- WATER
        • WATER EVAPOURATES PAINT DRIES.
          • LEAVING DROPS OF OIL AND PIGMENT - THESE THEN SPREAD AS THE WATER GOES.
