  • Chemistry Chapter 6 - Part 1
    • Acids and alkalis
      • Bases = metal oxides and metal hydroxides that neutralise acids
      • Acid + water = H+
      • Alkaline + water = OH-
      • pH scale - red=0=acid purple =14=alkali
      • Alkali = soluble hydroxides
    • Making salts
      • acid + metal = a salt + hydrogen
        • Evaporate water from salt until it crystalises
      • acid + base = a salt + water (neutralising)
        • hydrochloric acid - chloride
          • Sulphuric acid - sulphate
            • Nitric acid - nitates
        • eg. sulphuric acid + iron = iron sulphate + water
    • Neutralisationprecipitation and salts
      • acid + alkali = a salt + water
      • Ammonia salts
        • acid + ammonium (alkali) = a salt + water
        • Add ammonia to acid and crystallise the ammonium salt from the solution
        • Ammonium nitrate used as fertilliser
      • Making insoluble salts
        • Add together two solutions containing soluble salts and filter off salt from solution
        • Salt = precipitation
          • Used to remove pollutants from wastewater
