  • Chemistry Chapter 5
    • The periodic table
      • Arranged in order of atomic number
      • Noble gases are monatomic gases
      • Group 1 + 2 = reactive metals
      • Middle chunk = transition elements
      • Right side = non-metals (4 across)
      • Group 0 = noble gases
    • Alkali metals
      • Stored in oil
      • Reaction with water
        • Floats, fizzes (hydrogen) and moves around
          • Potassium's hydrogen catches fire
        • Water becomes very alkali
      • Reaction with non-metals
        • Vigorous
        • Produces white solid
    • Transition elements
      • Make coloured compounds
      • Used as catalysts in industry
    • Group 7 (halogens)
      • Reaction with hydrogen
        • Start explosive - get less reactive going down group
      • Displacement in an aqueous solution
        • A more reactive halogen will displace a less reactive hologen
          • eg. chlorine + potassium bromide = potassium chloride + bromine
