  • Chemistry Chapter 4 - Part 1
    • Gases in the atmosphere
      • Nitrogen -78% Oxygen -21% Argon -0.9% Carbon dioxide - 0.04%
      • Fractional distillation
        • 1) First condense air into liquid by compressing and releasing the pressure (-200)
          • 2) CO2 and water (solids) removed
            • 3) Column is colder at bottom so nitrogen boils off first (gas)
              • 4) Oxygen separated off as a liquid at bottom
                • 5) Argon collected between oxygen and nitrogen
    • Uses of gases
      • Liquid nitrogen (cold) - storing sperm
      • Nitrogen gas (unreactive) - storing foods and making ammonia
      • Oxygen - helping people to breathe and making things react
    • Oxygen and oxides
      • Test for oxygen = relighted glowing splint
      • Metal + oxygen = solid oxide
        • Non-metal + oxygen = gas oxides
      • + oxygen = oxidation
        • - oxygen = reduction
      • Metal oxide dissolved in water = alkaline
        • Non-metal oxide dissolved in water = acid
        • Bases - metal oxides that don't dissolve in water
        • Amphoteric oxides - react like acids and bases
