- Chemical Changes
- Reactions of metals and acids
- Oxydation = gaining oxygen Reduction = losing oxygen
- When a metal reacts with an acid it produces a salt plus hydrogen gas
- metal + acid / salt + hydrogen
- The salt produced depends on the kind of metal and type of acid used in the reaction
- hydrochloric acid = metal chloride
- sulfuric acid = metal sulfate
- nitric acid = metal nitrate
- metal carbonate: metal carbonate + acid / salt + carbon dioxide +water
- metal oxide: metal oxide + acide / salt + water
- a more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compound
- in group 1 all the elements have just one electron on the outer shell.
- as you go down the group the elements get more reactive
- Extraction of metals
- an ore is a type of of rock that contains sufficient minerals with importantelements including metals
- iron ore = hermatite aluminium ore = bauxtite coppeer ore = malachitr
- Electrolysis
- as ionic compounds are made of charged ions, they can conduct electricity but only if the can move
- if it's molten or dissolved it can move
- anions are positively charged while cations are negatively charged
- metal ions are positively charged so are attracted to the cation and non-metal ions are negatively charged so are attracted to the anion
- as ionic compounds are made of charged ions, they can conduct electricity but only if the can move
