- woman undresses from waist down
- lays on bed
- ankles together, drops knees
- done by GP or nurse
- a speculum is used
- inserted into vagina and opened so you can see the cervix
- uses small soft brush to collect cells out of the cervix
- cells collected are put in a pot
- sent off to a lab to be looked at under a microscope
- doesn't look for cancer, looks for abnormalities
- 93% of tests are clear, 6% of tests are abnormal
