- CD Players
- Use lasers to read digital inofrmation
- The surface of the CD has billions of shallow pit cut into it
- The area between the pits is called the land
- A laser is shone onto the CD and reflected from the shiny bottom surface as it spins around in the player
- The beam is reflected from a land and pit slightly differently
- This difference is picked up by a light sensor
- These differences in reflected signals can then be changed into an electric signal
- The change in the reflected beam represents on. No change represents off
- An amplifier or loudspeaker then convert the electrical signal into sound of the right pitch
