    • Use lasers to read digital inofrmation
    • The surface of the CD has billions of shallow pit cut into it
      • The area between the pits is called the land
    • A laser is shone onto the CD and reflected from the shiny bottom surface as it spins around in the player
    • The beam is reflected from a land and pit slightly differently
      • This difference is picked up by a light sensor
      • These differences in reflected signals can then be changed into an electric signal
    • The change in the reflected beam represents on. No change represents off
    • An amplifier or loudspeaker then convert the electrical signal into sound of the right pitch
