      • 1908- Bosnia, which was part of Turkish empire. There is a revolution in Turkey and Austria Hungary annex Bosnia. This annoyed Serbia, who appealed to it's ally Russia- who were annoyed because aH had annexed Bosnia without telling them. Russia backed serbia's demands for an international conference.
    • Assassination of Archduke
      • 28th june 1914- 120 police to cover 6km trip. Cabrinovic throwed a grenade at car but archduke deflected it with his arm and it fell intop the road and wounded 20 people.
      • Route changed- visit hospital- driver goes wrong way- told to stop. halted outside sandwich shop where gavrilo princip came out and fired two shots- one hit the archduke and the other his wife.
      • Led to July crisis.
        • 6 July- germany offers austria Hungary it's full support. 23rd july- Austria hungary send 10 point ultimatum to serbia.
          • They knew Serbia couldnt accept all ten- they wanted war. The leader of the war party- Conrad von Hotzendorf proposed war 25 times inbetwen the start of 1913 and july 1914.
        • Serbia then accepted all bar point 6- Austrians influencing the justic system. Austria declared war on serbia on 28th july.
          • This triggered the alliance sytem- 30th july russia begin to mobilise againsstaustria hungary, 1st august Germany declare war on russia.
    • Schlieffen plan
      • 1905- head of german army von Schlieffen decided best way to deal with war on 2 fronts was to defeat France in six weeks- he reasoned that they would not expect an attack through neutral belguim and holland.
        • Relied on the Russians taking more than six weeks to mobilise. Schlieffens original plan was only slightly changed for 1914- not to go through holland.
      • Britain didnt want to join war- it wanted to protect it'self. When german troops entered belgium on 3rd august, britain declared ar on Germany- as it was breaking the treaty of london which it had willingly signed in 1839 to declard belgium a neutral country. The kaiser called this the "scrap of paper"
        • Germany are not responsible for the war beginning- though it could be argued that because they gave AH full support, the ultimatum was sent and the war started. However, Germany were responsible for the spreading of the war to western europe.
    • In reality, the secret terms of all the alliances were the cause of the war- as everyone though they were attacking when in reality they were all defensive.
