  • Case Study 16: Climate Change
    • Key Terms:
      • Climate Change: long term change in the world's atmosphere including a rise in average global temperatures and changes in rainfall along with other weather patterns
      • Natural Greenhouse Effect: layer of gases that surrounds the Earth which helps keep temperature 33 degrees higher than it would normally be
      • Enhanced Greenhouse Effect: increasing amounts of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere from human activities
      • NGO's: any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group
    • Local actions:
      • Installing solar panels and insulation in peoples houses
      • Using pubic transport
      • Using energy efficient appliances
      • Buying local or fresh produce not frozen and imported
    • National actions:
      • Set up incentive to help individuals and companies to install cavity loft insulation and solar panels
      • Develop renewable energy
      • Improve public transports
    • International actions:
      • UN meetings to discuss what can be done to limit climate change
        • Began in 1992 with Rio Earth Summit
        • Each country has aims to  cut down their emissions and to introduce carbon credits
          • Carbon credits are where companies have to buy credits to emit certain amounts of carbon.
            • The idea is the cost of buying will encourage less emissions. Credits can be bought or sold if more of fewer emissions are released
