- carbon dioxide is diffused into the blood and transported in 3 different ways
- 7% dissolves into the plasma
- 23% combines with proteins in the plasma (including haemoglobin in red blood cells)
- 70% is transported as bicarbonate ion
- the CO2 enters red blood cells, combining with water to form carbonic acid that splits into hydrogen carbonate and hydrogen ions
