    • carbon dioxide is diffused into the blood and transported in 3 different ways
    • 7% dissolves into the plasma
    • 23% combines with proteins in the plasma (including haemoglobin in red blood cells)
    • 70% is transported as bicarbonate ion
    • the CO2 enters red blood cells, combining with water to form carbonic acid that splits into hydrogen carbonate and hydrogen ions
