- Benefits
- Builds sense of community while in isolation
- According to the Cleveland clinic, any act of altruism lowers blood pressure, increases self-esteem, reduces incidence of depression, lowers stress levels, and even increases life expectancy and levels of happiness
- Volunteering virtually is more flexible, meaning there is an increased likelihood of finding a role which suits you and your family
- Potential for global reach= more volunteers
- More nuanced, helpful roles available as volunteers can utilise their professional skills
- Drawbacks
- Potential for decreased retention rate as volunteers may not have the same level of patient feedback
- Increased time in front of a screen in an already tech-dominated life
- Isolating. No longer have sense of teamwork which may pique our interest in voluntary work
- How to make virtual volunteering as rewarding as in-person:
- Offer team meetings for those who would like to join. Help volunteers see the influence they are making and evoke a sense of comraderie
- Offer patient calls with volunteers. Help volunteers see impact
- Regular emails providing motivational, personalised messages thanking them and providing statistics
- Provide a presentation of future events when can be completed so an end goal is set
