- Suffers from earthquakes, flooding, drought, wildfires and landslides.
- Hazardous zone is along the San Andreas Fault which runs parallel to the coast - conservative plate boundary
- Influenced by El Nino - increase sub tropical storms - increased landslides
- Influenced by La Nina - increases drought - increased wildfires.

- Impacts: Humidity15%, temp 90+, nearly 500,000 acres of burnt vegetation, 7 people died.
- Response: People evacuated, funds were available for fire fighting units or emergency response programmes.
- Causes: Santa Ana winds. Air loses moisture as its forced to rise by high mountain ranges but high pressure also heats air.
- Landslides: La Conchita, 2005
- Impacts: 10 people killed, destroyed 13 houses, 23 houses damaged.
- Causes: after 15- day period of rain, in jan 05 southeastern portion of the 1995 landslide deposit failed, resulting in shallow, rapid fluid flow

- Impacts: 2 deaths, 40 injuries, 29,000 workers exposed to strong shaking
- Response: All high rise buildings now resistant, public highways strengthed & modified.

- Causes: 3 subtropical storm struck, added 30 inches of rain, levees failures flooded California
- Impacts : 23,000 homes/ businesses & agriculture/ land/bridges /roads destroyed, 9 people killed. 120,000 evacuated
