- Electrons are arranged around the nucleus in shells
- Each shell is a different energy level
- First shell can hold 2 electrons, the second can hold 8 electrons
- Electronic structure shows the number of electrons in each energy level
- E.g. sodium has 11 electrons so it is 2,8,1
- Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons on the outer most shell
- For example group 1 have one electron on the outer shell
- This means that they all react chemically in the same way
- Group 0 are the noble gases that're very unreactive elements.
- They have 8 electrons on the outer shell
