  • C13 Earth's Atmosphere
    • C13.1 History of the Atmosphere
      • billions of years ago, intense volcanic activity released gases forming atmopshere + water vapour condensed into oceans
        • CO2 which dissolved into water + carbonates reducing CO2
        • lots of nitrogen, water vapour, methane + ammonia
      • photosynthesis produced plants + algae therefore oxygen
        • CO2 + H2O -> C6H1206 + 602
        • animals evolved
    • C13.2 Our Evolving Atmosphere
      • 80% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, traces of CO2, water vapour + noble gases
        • ammonia + methane removed by reactions with oxygen
      • photosynthesis + formation of fossil fuels reduced CO2
    • C13.3 Greenhouse Gases
      • maintain temperatures high enough to support life
      • carbon dioxide + methane
      • earth absorbs short wavelength (ultraviolet), emits long wavelength (infrared)
        • increasing short wavelength
      • hard to predict effects of increasing greenhouse gases
        • hard evidence - ice cores suggest higher levels of CO2
    • C13.4 Global Climate Change
      • carbon footprint - total amount of greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of a product, service or event
        • reduce by buying less clothes online + paper bags
      • reduce greenhouse gases by reducing burning fossil fuels + using alternative sources of energy
        • cost money so developed countries
      • risks - increasing sea levels, threats to ecosystems + food production
    • C13.5 Atmospheric Pollutants
      • combustion - carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, particulates
        • sulfur dioxide - sulfur impurities burnt, cause acid rain
        • nitrogen oxides - nitrogen reacts with oxygen, causes respiratory problems
        • carbon monoxide - incomplete combustion, poisonous
          • particulates (soot) - burning diesel, causes global dimming
          • hydrocarbons are oxidised forming carbon dioxide + water
