- All substances are made up of atoms.
- A substance made up of only one type of atom is called an element.
- A compound is made up of more than one type of atom.
- A proton has a positive charge (+1).
- An electron has a negative charge (-1).
- A neutron has no charge (0).
- atoms have a small nucleus which is made up of protons and electrons.
- EXAMPLE: an oxygen atom is called 'O' on the periodic table.
