- C1.1 Fundamental Ideas
- Atoms
- Nucleus made of protons and neutrons
- Have surrounding shells which electrons move around
- Relative charges: Proton = +1 Neutron = 0 Electron = -1
- No. of electrons = No. of protons
- Atomic No. = No. of protons
- Mass No. = No. of protons + neuctrons
- Periodic Table
- Elements in the same group have the same No. of electrons in outer shell and so gives them similar properties
- Elements in group 0 are noble gases. They are unreactive because the have full outer shells
- Group 1 metals: Metal + water -> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
- Group 1 metals: Metal + oxygen -> metal oxide
- Bonding
- Ionic bonding: transfer electrons, when a metal and non metal reacts, metal ion +, negative ion -
- Covalent bonding : share electrons, 2 non metals, form compound
- Mass of products = mass of reactants
- Atoms
