  • Breathing
    • Expiration (passive process)
      • The external intercostals relax, causing the ribs to move downwards and inwards
      • The diaphragm muscles relax, making it dome upwards
      • Thorax volume decreases so pressure increases
    • Inspiration (active process)
      • Ribs pulled upwards and outwards as external intercostal muscles contract
      • Diaphragm muscles contract, causing it to flatten
      • Thorax volume increases so pressure decreases- air can come in
    • During heavy breathing, internal intercostals contract to pull the ribs down and in, this is a forced process
  • Expiration (passive process)
    • The external intercostals relax, causing the ribs to move downwards and inwards
    • The diaphragm muscles relax, making it dome upwards
