    • What is it?
      • when the cells in the breast grow and divide uncontrollably
    • Symptoms
      • lump or area of thickened breast tissue
      • change of size and shape of the breast
      • discharge from the nipple
      • lump or swelling in the armpit
    • Causes
      • age - most common in those over 50
      • family history
      • previously diagnosed benign breast lump
      • breast density
    • Treatment
      • after referral from G.P. they will be treated by multidisciplinary team
      • one or a combination of the following treatments
        • a mastectomy
        • radiotherapy
        • chemotherapy
        • hormone replacement
    • Impacts on the patient
      • Physical
        • tender/painful - may make washing and dressing difficult
        • swelling under armpits may make moving the arms uncomfortable
      • Intellectual
        • concentration when working may be hindered
      • Emotional
        • fear
        • denial
        • embarrassment
      • Social
        • uninterested in maintaining relationships with friends
      • Financial
        • taking time of work leads to reduced income
