          • they do this and Dido takes this as a sign that they are married
            • this "marriage"is witnessed by Juno
        • her pan is to keep the Trojans in Carthage so they don't become enemies
      • Venus says that she will only agree to these plans if she consults Jupiter
        • this is because venus knows Jupiter will not agree to this

        • prays to Jupiter and reveals to him how Dido has taken Aeneas has her husband and restricted him of his destiny
    • Jupiter's reaction
      • He feels Aeneas is not the man Jupiter promised
        • He sends Mercury to remind him of his duty
          • He finds Aeneas in a tyrian cloak
          • Aeneas is laying the foundations of carthage

      • he keeps it from Dido until he can find a way to tell her

      • She first rages with passion
        • she rages around the city like a bacchant who hears the name of Bacchus at a biennial ****
        • she feels Aeneas is a traitor for trying to leave in secret
          • 'Aeneas fights the anguish in his heart'

      • Dido prays for death
        • she tells anna that an Ethiopian priestess has informed her on how to make Aneas stay or to free her from her love
        • they must build a funeral pyre
          • on top they put Aeneas belongs eg his sword and an effigy of aeneas
            • she puts an end to her frenzy with Aeneas sword
              • Juno sends down Iris to free her sole by taking a lock of her hair
          • she prays that the Tyrians and the Trojans are great enemies and fight a great war
      • Mercury appears to Aeneas and tells him not to wait till dawn to leave
