      • "never put new shoes on the table" - superstitious, she needs all the luck she can get
      • "kids can't live on love alone" - even though she loves her kids the most she knows without money she can't get them what they need
      • "a new destination an' no reputation following me" - moving houses means starting fresh

      • "it's just another sign of the signs" because his job is secure because he's middle class he shows no compassion when firing a working class secretary// everyone else trying to look for a job are used to it when they get told no
