  • THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
    • Central Nervous System (CNS)
      • Brain
      • Spinal Cord
        • Responsible for reflex actions - transfers messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body
      • CNS = Responsible for psychological processes + maintaining life
    • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
      • Automatic Nervous System
        • Sympathetic Nervous System
          • Fight or flight
          • Increases: heart rate, glucose, sweat, dilates pupils, dilates bronchi
          • Decreases: digestion, saliva
        • Parasympathetic Nervous System
          • Rest and digest
          • Increases: digestion, salica, bile
          • Decreases: heart rate, sweat, constricts pupils, constricts bronchi
      • Somatic Nervous System
        • Carries sensory and motor information to and from the spinal cord
      • PNS = The nerves outside the brain which transmit messages around the body and coordinate the response
    • Endocrine System
      • Pineal Gland
        • Melatonin
          • Responsible for important biological rhythms
      • Hypothalamus
        • Stimulates and controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
      • Pituitary Gland
        • Anterior - ACTH
          • Stimulates the adrenal cortex and the release of cortisol during the stress response
        • Posterior - Oxytocin
          • Responsible for uterus contractions during childbirth
      • Thyroid
        • Thyroxine
          • Responsible for regulating metabolism
      • Pancreas
      • Adrenal Gland
        • Adrenal medulla - Adrenaline + Noradrenaline
          • The key hormones in the fight of flight response
        • Adrenal cortex - Cortisol
          • Stimulates the release of glucose to give the body energy, while supressing the immune system
      • Ovary/Testes
        • Oestrogen
          • Controls the regulation of the female reproductive system
        • Testosterone
          • Responsible for the development of male sex characteristics during puberty + muscle growth
    • Fight or Flight
      • 1. Threat occurs
        • Amygdala activated
      • 2. Amygdala
        • Responds to sensory input - sends distress signal to hypothalamus
      • 3. Hypothalamus
        • Activates SAM (sympathomedullary pathway)
      • 4.Sympathetic nervous system
        • SNS prepares body for FoF + stimulates adrenal medulla
      • 5. Adrenal medula
        • Secretes adrenaline into the bloodstream
      • 6. Fight or flight response
        • Adrenaline causes physiological changes to prepare body for FoF
      • 7. Threat passes
        • Relief
      • 8. Parasympathetic nervous system
        • PNS kicks in
        • Parasympathetic Nervous System
          • Rest and digest
          • Increases: digestion, salica, bile
          • Decreases: heart rate, sweat, constricts pupils, constricts bronchi
      • Fight or flight
