  • Biology Chapter 7 - Part 1
    • Homeostasis
      • The process by which the body maintains a constant internal environment
        • Relies on nervous system, hormones and body organs
      • Need to control - water content, ion content, temperature and blood sugar level
        • Loose water in sweat, breathing and urine
        • Loose ions in sweat and urine
        • Need constant body temp or cells and enzymes stop working
        • Cells need sugar for energy (controlled by pancreas)
    • Removing waste products
      • CO2 removed when breathing out
      • Urea removed by kidneys in the urine
      • Water and ions removed in sweat and urine
    • Liver
      • Excess amino acids converted into ammonia (deamination) and then urea which passes out in urine
      • Ethanol is detoxified and passed out as urine
      • Old blood cells are broken down and their iron is used to make new ones
    • Kidneys
      • Filter blood, excreting unwanted substances
      • Producing urine 1) Filtering blood
      • 2) Reabsorbing sugar, dissolved ions and needed amount of water
      • 3) Releasing urea, excess ions and water in urine
    • ADH and water balance of blood
      • If water content of blood is too low, pituitary gland secretes ADH into the blood
        • Causes the kidneys to reabsorb more water
      • If the water content of blood is too high, pituitary gland releases less ADH
        • Causes kidneys to reabsorb less water
      • As water level rises, less ADH is produced (negative feedback system)
