  • Biology Chapter 2 - Part 2
    • Tissues and organs
      • A tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and function
        • Organs are made up of tissues
      • Stomach: -muscular tissue to churn stomach contents -glandular tissue to produce digestive juices -epithelial to cover the inside and outside of the stomach
      • Leaf, stem and root: -epidermal tissue covers plant -mesophyll containing chloroplasts -xylem and phloem transport substances
    • Organ systems
      • Multicellular organisms are made up of organ systems
      • Digestive system changes food from insoluble molecules into soluble molecules and absorbs them into the blood
        • The digestive system is a muscular tube which includes...
          • 1) Glands - pancreas and salivary glands produce enzymes (biological catalysts)
            • 2) Stomach and small intestine - where digestion occurs
              • 3) Liver - produces bile which neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats
                • 4) Small intestine - where absorption of soluble food occurs
                  • 5) Large intestine - where water is absorbed from undigested food, producing faeces
