- this approach sees abnormality as the cause of brain functioning and structure
- Genetics- we may inherit a gene pre disposed to an illness eg. schitzophrenia
- Biochemistry- a chemical imbalance eg. low seretonin leads to depression
- Neuroanatomy- a faulty brain structure eg. lesions in the LH and VMH may lead to eating disorders
- Supporting Evidence:twin studies, effectiveness of anti-depressants, rat study
- Negatives: it is reductionist, it is a negative prospect for the individual, evidence is correlational
- Anti-depressants,anti psychotics and ECT
