  • Biological Approach - Evaluation
    • Strengths
      • Scientific Approach
        • Assumptions - localisation of brain function + NTs
          • biological explanations = clear variables + measurable
            • psychs = can conduct scientific research w/ these variables
              • e.g Raine et al - PET scans to look at brain functioning of NGRI
                • biological approach lends itself to scientific research
                  • can use to support biological explanations
        • unlike cog + psycho approach = based on inferences
          • cannot measure id or schemas
        • bio approach = uses lab studies
          • scientific = collect quantitative data
            • complies with objective aims of psychology
              • complies with objective aims of psychology
        • to maintain scientific = use animal studies
          • as it allows manipulation of variables that wouldn't be possible on humans
            • can cause harm to animals = unethical
      • Deterministic
        • can predict causes of behaviour
          • can 'predetermine' behaviour
            • can treat behav via known cause
              • e.g cause of scz = high levels of dopamine
                • treatment for scz = psycho therapeutic drugs hat lower levels of dopamine
      • Applicable
        • biological explanations = used to help treat mental disorders
          • schizophrenia
        • can be used to explain criminal behav
          • reduce cirminal behav via medical interventions (drugs)
            • make society safer + reduce recividism
    • Weaknesses
      • Reductionist
        • some explanations focus purely on biological explanations
          • scz = due to imbalance of NT
            • ignores other factors e.g social + cultural + psychological factors
      • Nature over Nurture
        • ignoring the life experiences = superficial
          • life exp = may have caused scz / criminal behav
            • treating behav w/ just drugs = not tright answer
              • should take a more social approach = find history of their upbringing
      • Nomothetic
        • ignores individual difference betw/ people
          • can't assume everyone is the same
            • everyone doesn't have the same biological functioning
