  • Biological Approach
    • Biological Structures
      • The Brain can control and impair our behaviour
        • 2 hemispheres, each with 4 lobes
      • The central nervous system - brain and spinal chord
      • The peripheral nervous system - somatic and automatic nervous systems
      • The nervous sytem carries messages from one part of the body to another using neurons
        • Neurons transmit nerve impulses in the form of electrical signals
    • Genes
      • Heredity is the padding of characteristics from one generation to the next through genes
      • Genes carry the instructions for a particular characteristic
        • Our genetic inheritance comes from our parents
      • Genotype - actual genetic makeup Eg.Hair/Eye colour
        • Influenced by environmental factors
      • Phenotype - Observable traits or characteristics
    • Neurochemistry
      • When a nerve impulse reaches the end of one neuron a chemical called a neurotransmitter is released.
        • It travels from one neuron to the next across a junction called a synapse
        • Excitatory - trigger nerve impulses Eg.Dopamine
        • Inhibitory - Inhibit nerve impulses Eg.Serotonin
      • Hormones are chemicals that are produced by endocrine glands.
        • Secreted directly into the bloodstream
        • They travel to target cells and stimulate receptors on the surface or inside cells
    • Evolution
      • Created by Charles Darwin in the 19th century
      • The theory of natural selection
        • Any genetically determined behaviour that enhances an individual's selection and production will continue in future generations
