  • Biochemical Tests
    • Benedict test
      • Detects reducing sugars
      • Add benedicts reagent and heat to 70 degrees
      • if a reducing sugar is present the solution will go blue to green to yellow to orange to red
      • Reducing sugars donate an electron to reduce copper II oxide ions to red copper I oxide
      • Benedict test part 2
        • detects non reducing sugars
        • 1: place sample in test tube, add 2 drops of Hcl and heat
        • 2: add 2 drops of sodiumhygrogen carbonate (an alkali)
        • 3: add benedicts reagent and heat
        • Iodine
          • detects starch
          • add each substance to its own spotting well
          • add 2 drops of iodine
          • if starch is present it will go orange to black
          • Biuret test
            • 1: add 1cm depth of sample
            • 2: add 1cm depth of biuret
            • 3: shake and observe
            • positive result is a purple colour
            • test for proteins
            • Emulsion test
              • test for fats
              • 1: place sample into a test tube
              • 2: add ethanol
                • 3: shake to dissolve lipids
              • 4: add water
                • positive result is a milky white emulsion
