- Biochemical Tests
- Benedict test
- Detects reducing sugars
- Add benedicts reagent and heat to 70 degrees
- if a reducing sugar is present the solution will go blue to green to yellow to orange to red
- Reducing sugars donate an electron to reduce copper II oxide ions to red copper I oxide
- Benedict test part 2
- detects non reducing sugars
- 1: place sample in test tube, add 2 drops of Hcl and heat
- 2: add 2 drops of sodiumhygrogen carbonate (an alkali)
- 3: add benedicts reagent and heat
- Iodine
- detects starch
- add each substance to its own spotting well
- add 2 drops of iodine
- if starch is present it will go orange to black
- Biuret test
- 1: add 1cm depth of sample
- 2: add 1cm depth of biuret
- 3: shake and observe
- positive result is a purple colour
- test for proteins
- Emulsion test
- test for fats
- 1: place sample into a test tube
- 2: add ethanol
- 3: shake to dissolve lipids
- 4: add water
- positive result is a milky white emulsion
- Benedict test
