  • biochemical tests
    • proteins
      • 1: test solution needs to be alkaline
      • 2: add a few drops of sodium hydroxide
      • 3: add copper (II) sulfate solution
      • positive: purple negative: Blue * the colours can be pale
    • reducing sugars
      • 1: reducing sugars include monosaccharides and disaccharides
      • 2: add benedicts reagent to sample
      • 3: heat but do not boil
      • positive: green-yellow-orange-brick red (strength of presence determins colour) Negative: blue
    • non reducing sugars
      • 1: EG sucrose
      • 2: boilsample with hydrochloric acid
      • 3: neautralise with sodium hydrogen carbonate
      • 4: carry out the step for reducing sugars
    • starch
      • 1: add iodine to potassium iodide solution
      • 2: add to sample
      • positive: dark blue/ black Negative: orange/brown
    • lipids
      • 1: add ethanol to sample
      • 2: shake for a minute
      • 3: add to water
      • positive: milky Negative: clear * can seem milky from shaking, the milkier it is the more lipid present
    • colorimeter
      • measures strength of coloured solution by measuring passes through it
      • measures how much light is absorbed by the solution
