  • Benefits of relationships on psychological wellbeing
    • There is a link between Happiness and marriage
      • Bradburn found that 35% of married people were happier compared to those who had never married (18%) and those separated, divorced and widowed were less happy (7%)
      • Wilson and Oswald suggested a number of reasons why marriage may be linked to happiness

    • Kamark et al (1990) assessed physiological response to stressful tasks

      • Backed up by statistics by Cochrane (1988) who looked at mental health admission and marital status
        • Single - 0.77%
        • Married - 0.26%
        • Widowed - 0.98%
        • Direction of effect is again difficult to establish
    • Breakdown has a negative effect on relationships
      • Veroff et al (1981) found married men (35%) and women (41%) whereas divorced women (15.5%) were most unhappy and single and divorced men (18.5%)
      • Harding (1985) found women with children reported negative feelings such as boredom and loneliness
    • Newcomb (1987) conducted a review and found that there was almost nothing published on relationships and cohabitation
      • It is argued it is more important to make a distinction between these two relationship types
        • Any differences are currently unknown
