  • Behavioural Factors
    • Smoking
      • Can give an individual a smokers cough or other respiratory problems
      • Increases the risk of getting cancers- especially lung, throat and mouth
      • Breath and clothes smell- off putting for others
      • Restrictions in social situations- limit the places you can go
      • Very expensive- less money to socialise
      • Feel like cigarettes are in control of them
      • Lowers self-esteem as individuals know it is very bad for them.
      • Reduces people's energy and stamina
    • Alcohol
      • Death or injury due to risk taking behaviour - drink driving
      • Can lead to health problems- weakening of the heart
      • Aggressive and criminal behaviour and alcohol are linked
      • Relationships break down due to drinking an no longer have support
      • May find it hard to get jobs or loose jobs if they're affected by hangovers
      • Brain damage leading to problems with memory and information processing
      • Addiction- feel they can't cope without it
      • Feel shame and guilt due to their actions- lowers self-esteem
    • Illegal Drugs
      • Increased or decreased heart rate and blood pressure
      • Addicts have a lack of concern about appearance
      • Overdose- Sudden death
      • Difficulties in relationships - loneliness and isolation
      • Financial Problems- no money for social activities
      • Lack of interest taking pat in leisure activities and spending time with peers
      • Guilt about usage and actions- lowers self- esteem
      • Reduced emotional control- suffer from mood swings/ anxiety attacks
      • Mental health problems eg depression may lead to suicide
    • Diet
      • Poor diets can leave people feeling irritable, sluggish and unhappy with their appearance
      • Other problems may result in isolation, shame, guilt and bullying

    • team sports encourages relationships and cooperation with others
    • Exercise may have a positive impact on an individuals self-concept
    • Exercise is known to release endorphins in the brain that makes people feel good
    • Increased self esteem
    • More confident through the interactions with others
