- Behaviour
modification- A03
- Only work in the short term
- 1. Behaviour modification programmes work well in short term but there is little suggest they work once the offender has left the institution.
- 2. This means that they have limited rehabilitate effect, which isn’t the aim of the programme
- 3. The reason for this lack of transfer to the real world is probably due to prison being a very controlled environment.
- 4. It is also possibly because the reward needs to be administered immediately, which isn’t possible outside of prison.
- Ethical issues
- 1. Behaviour modification programmes have received criticism for contravening human rights.
- 2. There isn’t an issue with the administration of positive reinforcement but with withholding such things as visits from relatives.
- 3. These are seen as a right for prisoners and therefore withholding them is not a reasonable action within a civilised society.
- Easy
to implement
- 1. The only criteria needed to establish an effective token economy system is consistency of approach from prison staff.
- 2. Other than this, there is no specialist training necessary to implement it. This is a strength of token economies, as they are easy to use.
- 3. However, there does need to be a constant approach from the prison staff.
- 4. Bassett and Blanchard found any benefits were lost after the staff applied the techniques inconsistently.
