  • Bandura
    • Background - what is social learning theory?
      • Children learn social behaviour such as aggression through the process of observation.
    • Aims/ Hypotheses
      • Aim 1 was to demonstrate that learning of aggression can occur through observation, and Aim 2 is to investigate the effects of gender
      • Hypotheses 1 was that children shown aggressive models will show significantly more imitative aggression.
        • Aim 1 was to demonstrate that learning of aggression can occur through observation, and Aim 2 is to investigate the effects of gender
      • Hypotheses two was that children show non-aggressive models will show significantly fewer aggressive acts than those shown/not shown aggressive models.
        • Hypotheses three shows that gender effects aggression: boys show more.
      • Hypotheses four shows children will imitate aggression modelled by a same sex adult more than that modelled by an opposite sex adult.
    • Sample and Sampling method
      • -Opportunity sampling     -72 children (36 boys and girls)                - Aged 3-5 years              -Stanford University, CA, USA
    • Research Method
      • Lab experiment (observation in Room 3). Matched Pairs
        • IV'S: behaviour of model (agg/non-agg), sex of model (male, female), sex of child (boy, girl)
        • DV'S: amount of imitative agg, amount of part agg, amount of non-imitative agg
    • How were the children matched?
      • matched on pre-existing levels of aggression to remove any individual differences. The experimenter and nursery teacher, rated the child's aggression on four, 5 point rating scales.
    • ROOM 1:  aggressive model assembles tinker set, waits 5v minutes, abuses 5ft Bobo doll by model (kicked). Non aggressive is there for 10 minutes, assembles doll gently. Control group didn't partake.
      • ROOM 2: aggressive model is taken to play room, 2 minutes later tells children "they're for other children" to force irritation. Same in non-agg and control.
        • ROOM 3: children taken individually into room 3 and observed through a two way mirror every 5 minutes by experimenter for 20 minutes.
    • RESULTS: aggressive group showed more aggression (agg male scored 25.4 compared to 1.5 non- agg male)
      • girls imitated females more than the boys for verbal aggression (female non-agg 21.3. male non-agg 17.2)
    • Conclusions
      • children will imitate aggression from adult models
      • children can learn behaviour through observation and imitation
      • more likely to learn verbal aggresion from sam sex model
